Spinning Out by Jumpface

“Spinning Out” is the single from the triple-song debut EP OxyMORON by one-man-band Jumpface, AKA Matt Marzola. With this song, Marzola shows his competency in every aspect of music, including composing, songwriting, performing, and producing. His influences from the skateboarding scene are evident in the grunge and pop-punk tones, as well as a guitar tone reminiscent of the Foo Fighters' and a vocal style slightly influenced by Blink-182's. Lyrically, the song uses simplistic phrases that efficiently communicate a deeper meaning upon closer listening.

In regards to the other writing aspects of the song, the melodies and transitions between sections are also expertly crafted. The focus on creating pleasing melodies can especially be seen in the guitar solo. Although it is rather brief, it shows that providing a unique and interesting melody triumphs over flashy technical acumen for Jumpface. He is making music for music’s sake—to express his inner world and connect with others, not to impress onlookers. Secondly, the well-thought-out and dynamic transitions between each section make them distinct and memorable. These small moments of crescendos, decrescendos, and energy changes created through fills or rhythm changes help keep the listener engaged—something that is crucial for any song due to the recent phenomenon of shrinking attention spans. Jumpface uses his talent in writing and composition to craft a three-and-a-half-minute song that is able to continuously introduce new aspects for the listeners with impeccable timing and cohesion.

The performing and producing of the song match the high quality of the writing and compositional aspects of the song. Doing a one-man-band schtick is a feat in and of itself, and to perform all of the parts well is a formidable challenge that Jumpface has successfully pulled off. As a competent performer, Jumpface is able to deeply understand the intricacies of how everything integrates and, hence, is able to highlight key moments with precise execution. This is also one aspect that makes Marzola such a great producer; his background and insight as a player himself informs his production choices. For instance, the vocal stacking and effects during the choruses create an “aggravated crowd” sensation that gives a powerful, yelling-like impact. This synergy that Marzola creates is another reason why “Spinning Out” is such a wonderful piece of craftsmanship.

"Spinning Out" stands as a testament to Matt Marzola's multifaceted talent. As Jumpface, Marzola masterfully intertwines his influences and skills, delivering a song that is both nostalgically familiar and refreshingly unique. The combination of seasoned musicianship, thoughtful lyrics, and meticulous production culminates in a track that captivates listeners and resonates on a deeper level. "Spinning Out" from OxyMORON is more than just a debut; it's a precursor of what’s to come from this one-man musical powerhouse.
