Happiness Hypothesis by MC Rock

MC Rock’s most recent single, “Happiness Hypothesis,” is a cool instrumental synthwave track that has elegant melodies cast over tumultuous background. The pulsating wave sounds and howling wind noise that whooshes in the background feels like the inner turmoil of existential crisis. The first melody is played by a bright timbre, and seems like a possibility of hope has been found. The second melody enters, and it is played by a MIDI bass guitar sound, and this melody is a bit more dissonant, and it feels like the previous thought from the first melody is being second guessed. This alternation between the more uplifting melody on the bright timbre and the slightly dissonant melody on the bass pitched against the noisy background feels like the ups and downs of searching for happiness in life. Before the bridge, the beat drops out and then re-enters a bit more sparse before returning to full swing, which creates some nice dynamic changes in the song. To wind down, the song has some nice held chords in the bass guitar, and there are some twinkle sounds in the last few seconds that seem like glimmers of an answer to the question, “What is happiness?,” the theme the song is centered around. Overall, it’s a very back-and-forth, up-and-down journey which parallels our own lives as we search for meaning, purpose, and happiness.
